Maria's relationship with Kamla Foundation started back in 2009 as the chair of Valpak's charity committee, one of our corporate sponsors. Inspired by the work we were doing in India she left her position as a Technical Advisor in June 2010 and travelled to India to help coordinate our first volunteer programme. Maria then stayed on for 3 months to set up and coordinate our Child Sponsorship and Water Management programmes becoming an active member of the local community and gaining a valuable insight into the everyday struggle faced by local people.
Maria then continued travelling, volunteering and working for a number of charitable organisations throughout Australia and New Zealand. In October 2011 she ran the Auckland Half Marathon raising nearly £1000 for our work with vulnerable young women. She returned to the UK in June 2012 after 5 months in South America and will continue to take an active role in the work of the Foundation moving forward whilst looking to secure a job in the not for profit sector.
Maria studied Drama, Community Theatre and Media at Winchester University which left her with a passion to make a difference, having worked with a wide variety of community groups including the mentally and physically disabled, youth groups and young offenders. She has always been keen to pursue her interest in international development and is delighted to join Kamla Foundation as a Trustee.
